Situated on the slopes above the confluence of alknanda and dhauliganga rivers is the winter home of the lord of badrinath, Joshimath has many important temples incloding the temple of ugra narsimha devoted to the half-lion half-man incarnation of lord vishnu.
The name Joshimath has been derived from " Jyotirmath, Adi Guru Shankaracharya attained enlightenment in the 18th century while meditating under a tree and established a Math ( hermitage centre) here.
