Port Blair
Port Blair is the capital and the gateway to the Andamans by sea and by air.
It is a small town with a leisurely lifestyle, and a pleasant holiday destination.
But, there is more beauty lying in wait beyond, and the place can be used
as a base camp to explore the rest of the islands.
Places of Interest
More often than not the first stop for tourists is the Cellular Jail - a grim
reminder of British colonial rule when Indian freedom fighters were imprisoned
here and tortured almost always to death. The building with 698 cells is now
a national memorial to those who sacrificed their lives for India's independence.
Wandoor is an hour's drive from Port Blair. It's an excellent beach for snorkelling
and diving and for exploring the rich and exotic underwater marine, life,
and colourful coral formations. It has been declared a National Marine Park
for sea turtles and other marine fauna.
Corbyn's Cove is just 7 km from Port Blair and is a beach town, with white
stands, green palms and a quiet bay. The place also has a beach resort and
some other lovely accommodation, sometimes providing a spectacular view of
the sea from a hill tip.
Mount Marriet was once the summer resort of the British Chief Commissioners.
The drive up provides a good view of the Port Blair harbour.
Chariya Tapu is situated on the southernmost tip of South Andaman. The place
is lush green, with its beach criss-crossed by narrow creeks.
Sippighat Farm - 14 km from the town, with its 80 commercially cultivate acres
grows both indigenous vegetation as well as the ones introduced to the island.
It's a flourishing ground for accounts, cloves, cinnamon, paper and nutmeg.
The Chatham Saw Mill is one of the oldest and largest in Asia, employing men
and elephants. Timber related industries are an important source of employment
as the islands are a very rich source of wood. The Chatham Saw Mills are located
on a tiny island, off the main island, and connected to it by a bridge.
Anthropological Museum Marine Museum and Mini zoo, which are a delight to
the anthropologist, Zoologist and ecologist, for the islands' unique environment.
